Burma's Karen flee army offensive

About 3,000 ethnic Karen villagers have reportedly fled from Burma into Thailand in recent days because of a new Burmese military offensive.
Aid groups say the refugees are from Ler Per Her camp in eastern Karen state, near where the Burmese army is reported to be attacking Karen rebels.
It is thought to be one of the largest movements of refugees across the Thai-Burma border in a decade.
Meanwhile Burma still faces pressure to halt Aung San Suu Kyi's trial.
The pro-democracy leader is charged with breaching the terms of her house arrest, a charge that could leave her in jail for up to five years.
Former Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong visited Burma on a "goodwill trip" on Monday, as international anger against the regime continued to mount.
'Largest exodus for a decade'
The Free Burma Rangers aid group said refugees began streaming out of the Ler Per Her camp on Friday and continued to arrive in Thailand throughout the weekend.
The Karen Human Rights Group, a Thai-based humanitarian group, put the number of refugees at about 3,000 - and so too did a Thai army official speaking to local media.
The Burmese government has refused to comment on these reports.
The Karen Human Rights Group said the influx was "the largest exodus from Karen state on a single occasion" since the government launched a major offensive against the Karen rebels in 1997.
The refugees are now taking shelter about 100 km (62 miles) north of Mae Sot, a Thai border town.
The rights group Christian Solidarity Worldwide and other organisations have called on the United Nations to intervene to prevent a humanitarian crisis along the border.
Rebels from the Karen National Union (KNU) have been fighting for greater autonomy from Burma's central government for more than half a century.
But the KNU is weakening under the impact of continued army offensives, as well as divisions within its ranks and with other Karen groups.
Another group, the Democratic Karen Buddhist Amy (DKBA), made a pact with the Burmese government and is reportedly now involved in the current fighting on the government side.

Ban: I'm deeply disappointed

Burma's junta has refused to allow visiting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to meet jailed opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Mr Ban was told of the refusal when he held a second round of talks with military leader Gen Than Shwe.
"I'm deeply disappointed," he told reporters. "I'm very sorry to report to you that this is not possible."
Ms Suu Kyi's trial on charges of breaking the terms of her house arrest was postponed again on Friday.
Mr Ban said Than Shwe had told him during their 30-minute meeting, in the remote administrative capital Nay Pyi Taw, that Ms Suu Kyi was on trial and he did not want to interfere with the judicial process.
The UN leader later left for Burma's main city, Rangoon.
Mr Ban's had a two-hour meeting with Gen Than Shwe on Friday.

Why is junta afraid of Suu Kyi?
Mr Ban said he had been assured that elections planned for 2010 would be "held in a fair, free and transparent manner".
The UN chief is due to make a speech outlining his vision for Burma later on Saturday.
Ms Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace laureate, has spent much of the past two decades in prison or under house arrest.
She was transferred from house arrest to prison in May after an American man swam to her lakeside house. She faces up to five years in jail if convicted.
Next year's elections are part of the military government's "roadmap to democracy," but critics say they will be a sham designed to strengthen the generals' four-decade grip on power.
Opposition activists say Ms Suu Kyi's trial is designed to keep her out of the way until after the elections.

Hopes and fears over Suu Kyi trial

The trial of Burma's pro-democracy leader on charges of breaking the terms of her house arrest has been proceeding in fits and starts at a court inside Rangoon's Insein prison, but a verdict is expected soon.
A BBC correspondent in Burma spoke to people about their hopes and fears for Aung San Suu Kyi.
Foreign journalists are barred from Burma, so our correspondent must remain anonymous for his own safety.
In Burma's second city, Mandalay, the streets are full of bicycles at rush hour as men and women head to their places of work and study.
But behind the picture-postcard setting of palaces and stupas [temples], is a country where people can be arrested for telling a joke or having a photograph of jailed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Behind closed doors, in the security of their homes and among those they can trust, people hand out pictures of Ms Suu Kyi.
To be caught by police with her photograph is cause enough to be imprisoned. To be caught talking to a foreign journalist means risking a sentence to a term in one of Burma's many jails.
But people are angry and want the world to know of their plight and their reverence for the woman referred to as The Lady.
She is the symbol of what was and what may be.
'Only hope'
To many Aung San Suu Kyi remains the symbol of the hopes of those opposed to the generals who rule this country.
I had to travel to the 200-year-old U Bein's Bridge on the outskirts of the city to meet an opposition supporter.
On the world's longest teak bridge, we met with a handshake and checked that nobody could listen to us.
Carefully, he took a picture from shirt pocket and handed it to me.
It is a colour picture of the Nobel Peace Prize winner. He had been given it that morning at his friend's house.
I asked him: why do people see her as so important?
"People love Aung San Suu Kyi. People believe Aung San Suu Kyi. She's our only hope."
Just saying these words could lead to imprisonment.
Looking over his shoulder at a couple of passing monks, he waited until they had walked by. In Burma, even the holy men are looked at with suspicion. Informers are everywhere.
"We love her. She is the hope of the people. If she was jailed the people will be angry. And this could be the small spark that can burn down the palace," he told me.
With elections due next year, many believe that her arrest is a convenient way for the generals to keep the one person they fear out of the way.
But the people are poor in Mandalay. Inflation is high and many have to keep more than one job to provide for their families.

And nobody trusts the police. Everyone I asked about the problems in Mandalay pointed at the police, who are constantly requesting money.
Memories of the 2007 protests, when monks and opposition supporters marched through the streets of this city, are still fresh in the mind. People are afraid.
One man I met had been jailed for handing a monk a bottle of water during the protests in 2007.
"People will not show their anger, but in their hearts they are sad," he told me.
"When the protestors went down the streets, crowds lined the roadside and cheered them. But the people are poor. Nobody could give them food - so they handed out water. And anyone who offered anyone a drink was arrested, and many were taken away to prison for months."
People will be watching for news from Insein Prison in Rangoon.
But will the iconic status they give the woman in the dock lead the people of Mandalay into the streets once again, or will fear of the government force them to keep their support for all she stands for only in their hearts.

U.N. boss to push Myanmar leadership on Suu Kyi

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will visit Myanmar at the end of the week for talks that will include the detention of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the United Nations said.

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been held in confinement for 13 of the past 19 years.

Ban is going at the invitation of the military junta that runs Myanmar, and is expected to also discuss the detention of other political prisoners.

"The secretary-general believes that the sooner these issues are addressed, the earlier Myanmar will be able to move towards peace, democracy and prosperity," said Michele Montas, Ban's spokeswoman. "He looks forward to meeting all key stakeholders to discuss what further assistance the United Nations can offer to that end."

Myanmar's government has said next year's scheduled elections will reintroduce democracy in the country.

Suu Kyi -- the face of Myanmar's pro-democracy movement -- is on trial on allegations of subversion. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate and two of her maids have been charged in a May 3 incident in which an American, John William Yettaw, 53, swam across a lake to her house and stayed for at least a night. Myanmar's military regime has held Suu Kyi under house arrest for 13 of the past 19 years and rarely allows her visitors.

If convicted, Suu Kyi, 63, could face three to five years in prison. Her trial is being held inside a prison compound in the city of Yangon. The proceedings have repeatedly adjourned while Suu Kyi's lawyers have challenged the court's rulings in the case.

Ban told CNN in May that he was in talks with Myanmar's leadership about traveling to Yangon to seek Suu Kyi's release, as well as push for democratization.

"This is an unacceptable situation when she has been under detention for such a long time," Ban said. "She's a Nobel peace laureate."

She has been barred for life from running for political office, but human rights groups suspect that Myanmar's junta worries that her release would invigorate the opposition.

Suu Kyi has been the focus of a global campaign to free her.

Her National League for Democracy party won more than 80 percent of the legislative seats in 1990, but she was disqualified from serving because of her house arrest, and the military regime ignored the results.

It was during her house arrest that she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.

Suu Kyi married a British man, who died in 1999, and they have two sons. Myanmar's government now says citizens who have borne children with foreigners cannot run for office.

Suu Kyi trial nears end in Myanmar

(CNN) -- The trial in Myanmar of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi drew closer to an end Friday with testimony from the last witness and the scheduling of closing arguments.

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been held in confinement for 13 of the past 19 years.

After completing a seven-hour examination of Suu Kyi's final defense witness, the court announced that closing arguments will be heard July 24.

Nyan Win, Suu Kyi's lawyer, said the legal team has finished drafting arguments, which totaled 18 pages. Suu Kyi reviewed them and added four more pages, he said.

The verdict will come sometime after July 24, Nyan Win said, because by law the court cannot announce the verdict on the same day as closing arguments.

Suu Kyi -- the face of Myanmar's pro-democracy movement -- is on trial on allegations of subversion. The 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner and two of her maids have been charged in a May 3 incident in which an American, John William Yettaw, 53, swam across a lake to her house and stayed for at least a night.

Suu Kyi, 64, is accused of violating her house arrest by offering temporary shelter to Yettaw. But she has said she doesn't know Yettaw, didn't know of his plans, and didn't do anything wrong.

Her supporters say the arrest is meant to keep her confined so she cannot participate in the general elections that the junta has scheduled for next year.

Suu Kyi was put under house arrest in 1989. The following year, the National League for Democracy won more than 80 percent of the legislative seats in the first free elections in the country in nearly 30 years. But the military junta disqualified Suu Kyi from serving because of her house arrest, refused to step down and annulled the election results.

Jade Tycoons Distribute Food, Water To Flood Victims

In the aftermath of floods in the Uru River and landslides, jade tycoons are distributing much-needed food and drinking water to victims in Hpakant jade land in Burma's northern Kachin State, said local sources. Massive floods and landslides, one of the worst in recent memory, occurred on July 4 and 5.

The rescue and relief operations could start in the affected areas only after the floods subsided and the heavy downpour stopped on July 7, said residents of Hpakant.

Local Kachin jade tycoon Ze Lum and his colleagues are distributing rice and fried eggs, which are packed in one-time use plastic bags as well as one litre bottles of drinking water to hundreds of flood survivors and victims in Hpakant jade mining city, said residents of Hpakant.

According to local people, the Burmese military junta is yet to begin rescue and relief operations in the affected areas. The junta earns its third highest foreign exchange from gem, mainly from Hpakant jade mines but the victims and survivors of the floods and mudslides are being ignored by the regime, said locals.

Vehicular traffic has ground to a halt between Hpakant and areas outside jade land because the road has been blocked by landslides in three places between Nam Ya and Lonkin, also called Lawng Hkang in Kachin, according to travellers.

Only motorcycles can cross the landslide hit areas and travel to Hpakant. But motorcycle owners have to pay 30,000 Kyat per vehicle as carrier fee at every landslide block, said travellers.

Eyewitnesses said they saw a bulldozer yesterday on the Hpakant Road heading towards the blockages between Nam Ya and Lonkin.

Residents of Hpakant said, Uru River, the main river in Hpakant jade land, inundated three major cities--- Hpakant, Seng Tawng and Lonkin but Nga-Pyaw-Taw, Kala Jawng, Kalat Kone and Maw One quarters in Hpakant were the most severely affected by floods and mudslides.

In Kala Jawng quarter in Hpakant, almost entire houses in the quarters with over 60 homes, except one wooden two-storeyed house were wiped out by the flood waters on July 4, said local people.

The death toll according to the City Administrative Office or City Peace and Development Council of the junta, is over 100.

Following the flood and the consequent shortage of clean water in Hpakant, many people are suffering from water-borne diseases like dysentery and cholera, a resident of Hpakant told KNG today.

An outsider cannot estimate the total number of dead, the number of victims and survivors in the flood affected areas because the roads have over three-feet of mud and slush, said locals.

Myitkyina Public Hospital Teeming With Child Patients

With the onset of monsoon in June there has been a sudden increase in the number of child patients in Burma's northern Kachin State's capital Myitkyina leaving no room for fresh admissions in the Myitkyina public hospital, said hospital sources.

The hospital has only one children’s ward and it can admit around 80 child patients, said insiders.

As of now, the children’s ward is full with over 100 child patients mainly of ages under 12. Given the overcrowding, some are being treated on the corridors outside the ward, a hospital blue staff told KNG today. Many teenagers in the town are also suffering from Malaria and symptoms of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), said hospital sources.

According to sources in the children’s ward, all infants and child patients in the hospital mainly have symptoms of DHF and Malaria --- high continuous fever, dysentery, headache, respiratory and intestinal problems with sore throat, coughing, nausea, vomiting, and solid waste excretion with blood.

Following blood examination results only a few child patients were found to be afflicted with DHF virus and most patients have been given virus-infection status by the hospital, the sources added.

There are also many child patients in the town but they cannot go to the hospital for two reasons--- there is no more place for new patients in the hospital and they lack affordability for treatment, said residents of Myitkyina.

At the hospital, the patients have to pay 4,000 Kyat to 7,000 Kyat per person for blood examination. They also have to buy all injections and medicine, said hospital staff.

Clinics in the town are also full of infants, children and teenager patients, said local people.

Patients found to be suffering from DHF or otherwise in both the government public hospital and outside clinics are mainly treated with Chinese anti-malarial injections like Artemether and Artesunate with anti-biotic tablets and injections, said parents of patients.

According to locals, almost every family in the town has one or more DHF or Malaria patient.

Hospital and residents of Myitkyina said the number of infants; children and teenager patients in the town are much more than that in last year’s rainy season.

As part of the response of the ruling Burmese junta administration to the virus infection, the Myitkyina Town Health Department has been spraying anti-mosquito gas in the houses of patients' suffering from DHF virus, said hospital sources.

Northern Commander Meets Kachin Church Leaders On Transformation Issue

Leaders of the biggest churches in Myitkyina, Kachin State were summoned by the Burmese ruling junta's Northern Regional Commander Brig-Gen Soe Win two weeks ago to discuss the amorphous stand of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) regarding transforming its armed-wing, local Churches' sources said.
The church leaders in Myitkyina were especially called to a meeting at the Mali Hka Centre Hall in the Northern Regional Command headquarters in Myitkyina on June 27 from 10 a.m. to noon by Commander Brig-Gen Soe Win. They were told that the KIO had not given a clear answer on transforming the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) to a junta-proposed Border Guard Force (BGF), said participants.

The church leaders were requested by the Commander that they tell KIO leaders to come up with a clear answer whether the KIA will be transformed to BGF or not, added the participants.

According to sources who attended the meeting, the Kachin church leaders told the Commander that to resolve the problems it would take a long time and that it could only be solved through a process of serious discussions.

At the meeting there were 17 church leaders from Myitkyina Christian Council (MCC), which is made up of churches like Baptist, Roman Catholic, Anglican and Independent Christian Church (also called Shanglawt Hkristan in Kachin). The participants also included Rev. Dr. Lahtaw Saboi Jum former general secretary of the Kachin Baptist Convention, who is currently serving as a leader of civilian peace mediators between the KIO and the junta, and the current KBC general secretary Rev. Labya Paul Naw Tawng, said participants.

KIO/A officials in Laiza headquarters on the Sino-Burma border in Kachin State said, the KIO is now awaiting a reply from the junta over its request that the issue be solved only after a new government comes to power after next year’s elections.

On July 8, KIO delegates and Commander Soe Win met at the Mali Hka Center in Northern Regional Command headquarters in Myitkyina but the meeting could not resolve the issue, KIO sources said.

According to the junta's time frame, the KIO has to come up with an answer in black and white over transforming the KIA to the BGF by this month, said KIO sources.

Kachins Lose Wherewithal Under KIO-Junta (Opinion)

People in Kachin State have been largely dependent on precious and priceless natural resources like gems and the state's rich biodiversity. The dependence was on splendid and valuable stones and precious metal such as jade and gold in large quantities and this was the main trading business in the past.

However, now the Burmese military regime has resorted to a cunning strategy for the rapid absorption of the massive resources by granting mining permission to Burmese, Chinese and Indian businessmen who have large amounts of money.

Kachin people who have a limited amount of money cannot compete with the rich Chinese and Indians, capable of investing big amounts of money. To make matters worse Kachin businessmen are losing out or are incapable of holding on to their own land which yields business.

One of the recent instances has been the case between Kachin businessman Tsinyu Zau Mung the owner of Seng Bum Company and Chinese businessman Kyaw Myint the owner of 'Hole in One' company.

According to Hpakant jade traders, "Seng Bum Company had recently bought some parts of the 'Hole in One' company's jade mines, and started excavations. Soon after which there were some good results on those particular jade mines. Therefore, the 'Hole in One' Company's owners wanted the jade mines back."

The case went to court of the Kachin Independent Organization (KIO).

The Chinese businessman claimed that he would seize that particular jade mine by filing a case in the KIO's court for he had a good relationship with many high ranking KIO officers.

The Chinese businessman even offered more than 500 million kyats for the court judgment going in his favour.

It was stated that at that particular time, the KIO court had judged fairly despite the relationship, the bribe, and allegations of racism.

After the hearing by the judge, the Chinese businessman even accused the KIO's court of racism and sent the accusation letter to the court.

However, despite the decision of the KIO's court, the Chinese businessman was allowed to do jade mining on the sold out jade mines to the Seng Bum Company.

The reason why he could continue his jade mining business in the sold out areas was because he was granted permission from the vice-president of KIO, Lt-Gen Nban La Awng and he was adopted by the general.

It was said that the Lt-Gen Nban La Awng had abused the power with no respect to the KIO's court's judgment or despite the decision of the KIO's court.

Meanwhile the Chinese businessman has been boasting and saying that nobody can touch and challenge him for he has good relations with all the officers of the KIO.

In conclusion it needs to be pondered how Kachins are going to survive in their own land, if there is no back up or support from even their own Kachin Independent Organization or Army (KIO/A). Instead of looking at the upliftment of Kachin people's life, there are all the signs of a downhill slide in different aspects of life.

Death Toll In Floods And Landslide Rise To 70 In Hpakant


The death toll has risen to 70 in the aftermath of floods and landslides in Burma's Hpakant jade mining area in the country's northern Kachin State on July 4 and 5. Hundreds have been injured including over 10 people from local Kachin Baptist Churches, according to official figures available from Burmese Army authorities.

The floods and mudslides were the biggest ever witnessed in Hpakant jade land. The devastation was said to have been caused because the ruling junta has been allowing indiscriminate jade mining activities with sophisticated machines following the ceasefire agreement between the regime and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) in 1994, said local environmentalists.


The death toll was compiled till yesterday by the administrative office of the Hpakant Jade Mining City also called the City Peace and Development Council (Ma Ya Ka) of the junta, said Hpakant residents.

The search for bodies in jade land is underway and an additional 30 bodies were found under soil and slush dug out from the jade mines yesterday evening, a resident of Hpakant told KNG today.

Eyewitnesses said they saw dozens of bodies being carried in trucks while people were searching for more bodies under the soil heads which came crashing down in the heavy downpour.

Most of the deaths resulted from the mudslides because of the high land dug for the jade mines and because most villages were constructed on low land near the Uru River, according to residents of Hpakants.

The Hpakant government hospital is full of people with injuries as of Saturday night but a callous Burmese military authority is yet to launch any rescue mission for the victims, said residents of Hpakant.

Residents expect the death toll to touch several hundred because over seven main jade mining villages were severely affected by the flood from the Uru River which brought down heaps of soil and mud dug out from thousands of jade mines near their villages.

The three major jade mining cities of Hpakant, Lonkin (also called Lawng Hkang in Kachin) and Seng Tawng were flooded by the Uru River. However the water is receding since yesterday, added residents.

Private and non-government rescue and relief missions were started yesterday in some of the flood and landslide affected areas like Hpakant city, Maw One, Seng Tawng and Lonkin after the rain and floods stopped, said locals.

Soon after the floods, the Hpakant Regional Kachin Baptist Convention under the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC), the biggest Kachin Christian body in the country formed an emergency committee. It is implementing rescue and relief missions, said a KBC staff member in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State.

Roads in most villages in Hpakant jade land are covered with over three-foot of mud and slush allowing only ferry transportation, said local residents.

Residents of Hpakant city are now busy cleaning their inundated homes. They are facing an acute shortage of clean water, said residents.
